Trail Running in Julian Alps is a truly unique experience. This adventure uncovers the best parts of this unique and one of the most protected national parks in Europe.

From Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, a transfer to Kranjska Gora is organized. The drive to the northwestern point of Slovenia takes about an hour. If you have enough time, you can take a leisurely walk around the idyllic ski center, perhaps visit the Zelenci nature reserve, the source of Sava River, or the FIS ski jumping valley in Planica. But don’t waste too much energy – the first serious hiking stage starts tomorrow.

First stage will take you through the heart ot the Julian Alps and across some of the best viewpoints of the Triglav National Park. Starting from Kranjska Gora, the pleasant valley trails lead you past the Jasna Lake to Krnica Valley and its meadows under steep rock faces of Škrlatica, Prisank and other mountains. You will then slowly climb the heights of Vršič Pass – setting your foot on the old pass road, which now resembles the green grassy carpet and offers spectacular views.

After the climb you can enjoy a downhill on a beautiful single trail towards the spring of the emerald Soča River, which is one of the natural pearls of Slovenia. The old shepherds trail welcomes you in the charming Trenta Valley, where you’ll finish your 2nd stage. After the stage you can enjoy in the pure nature of Trenta Valley, which is widely known for their pristine nature.

Distance: 24,9 km
Elevation: 1020 m+

This day you will follow the emerald Soča River, almost from its spring towards Bovec. The wild river waters will add the natural melody to your exploration of the valley beauties. Old farmhouses, monument on the viewpoint, gorges with waterfalls and the national park information center all deserve a stop in this spectacular natural setting.

Around the Soča Village you encounter the heritage of WW1 battles and enjoy some fine views of the Soča, which is cutting its way through the narrow gorges, before the landscape opens in the wider Bovec basin. Bovec with its small airport is a popular place for all adrenaline enthusiasts, you can enjoy rafting, paragliding, or ziplining.

Distance: 21,8 km
Elevation: 340 m+

The beginning of the stage is rich with waterfalls. Huge amounts of water after some heavier rains come out of the massive Kanin Mountains and fall into the valley in spectacular falls – Virje being one of the most charming, Boka the mightiest in Slovenia. In the next kilometers you will follow the paths parallel to the river and watch the rafters and kayakers enjoying their water adventures just few meters away from you.

Make a stop on some of the old wooden bridges and let your sight sink into the emerald colour of the Soča. Just before reaching Kobarid, there is another unforgettable waterfall hidden in its narrow gorge – the Kozjak falls.

Distance: 27,4 km
Elevation: 900 m+

After crossing the Soča one last time, you will reach the stunning setting of Drežnica Village, high under the magnificent slopes of Mount Krn.  Follow the narrow road and set your foot on the forest trail, which will bring you to Italian memorial chapel on Planica. Take your time for some of the best views back down to the Soča Valley and on the surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps.

The last section of the stage is full of mountain meadows, where cows are grazing in summertime – the best possible location for milk and the famous Tolminc cheese. The history of this place was unfortunately tragic and numerous monuments from the WW1 times bear witness to the bloody battles between 1915 and 1917. After the descent back to the valley, you will come to Tolmin, the central town of this region and a pleasant place to finish the day.

Distance: 26 km
Elevation: 1700 m+

The beauties of a walking trail along the banks of the emerald lake between Tolmin and Most na Soči are hard to beat. Passing the confluence of the Tolminka and Soča Rivers – a popular bathing spot in summer – and enjoying the views across the calm waters between the green hills adds a special charm to this stage.

The town of Most na Soči is full of its own beauties: the viewpoint on the glacial moraine, another confluence, the Idrijca River gorge and archeological heritage all make it worth for a longer stop here. There is also the most spectacular railway line in Slovenia, which will help us shorten our 6th stage.

But don’t worry, the day is not over yet. After a short ride with a railway, you still need do a nice climb to the Soriška Planina. Just a perfect place for the end of the stage – surrounded by beautiful mountain meadows and with a perfect view on the mighty Julian Alps.

Distance: 20,7 km
Elevation: 1120 m+

This day you will walk across the hills, where two Slovenian regions meet – Primorska and Gorenjska – each with its typical patterns and traditions, but both hospitable and full of attractions, which will enrich your walk. The green peaks of Lajnar and Možic are again full of pre – WW2 bunkers and spectacular views.

The heart of Triglav National Park with Slovenia’s highest mountain is just to the north, on the other side of Bohinj Valley. This is a natural paradise, which was »given by God himself« as its name suggests. Old villages, wide meadows and crystal-clear Lake with its iconic church near the stone bridge over the Sava Bohinjka River will definitely crown your day here.

Distance: 19,9 km
Elevation: 700 m+

It’s time for the mountains again – but a different kind of them. This stage makes for a very pleasant escape from the valleys if they get too warm, since it takes you through the never-ending forests of Pokljuka plateau. Walking through the shade of coniferous forests, stopping at occasional meadows and enjoying some great food in the mountain huts is an experience not to be missed.

The first part of the stage is a climb to Uskovnica meadows, which you can enrich with the visit of the Mostnica Gorge and its Devil’s Bridge. The second half is a proper forest walk, where the wooden »street« of Zajamniki shepherds’ village is one of the most photogenic spots in Slovenia and a real highlight.

Distance: 18,8 km
Elevation: 960 m+

Coming out of the forests always makes for a great change, as you find yourself on the sunny side again. But this time – leaving the Pokljuka greenery and emerging in one of the most famous places in Slovenia, will be even more special. The last section of the long shadow will be the hidden Pokljuka Gorge. Walking through the short cave and visiting the narrowest, rocky part of the gorge is a special attraction – even if the gorge is a dry one, because the river, which created it, doesn’t flow through here anymore.

The nice, well-organized villages mark your last kilometers to world famous Bled. Fairytale Lake, little island with its church and the millennial castle crowning everything from above is hard to describe. Come and walk around these beauties to enjoy one of Slovenia’s iconic spots.

Distance: 20,7 km
Elevation: 240 m+

There is another stunning gorge on your route, just a stone’s throw away from Bled – the Vintgar gorge. It gets very visited in the summertime, so you won’t be alone here, but the place is definitely worth seeing.

As you leave it, you enter a different type of world – alpine forests again. This time you will take some of the loneliest trails and gravel roads to cross the Mežakla plateau – high above the Dolinka Valley and the city of Jesenice. At the end of the crossing, you will enjoy some breathtaking views from Mount Jerebikovec – once again Mount Triglav and some other high peaks are just a couple of kilometers away.

After the descent you rich the mountain village of Mojstrana – the entry point to a glacial Vrata Valley and the home of main Slovenia’s Mountaineering Museum.

Distance: 25 km
Elevation: 1340 m+

The upper Dolinka Valley brings you some stunning views around every corner. Let it be the Belca Village and its panorama of Karavanke Ridge on the border with Austria, or the simply spectacular wreath of Martuljek peaks. They don’t just stand high above the valley and give an unmissable photo opportunity, but are also sending some waters, which create the waterfalls, which are easy to see from the path which takes you there through the short narrow gorge.

On the opposite side of the valley, it’s hard to describe the beauties of Srednji Vrh village, its views and old, traditional farmhouses. They create the beginning of the conclusion of your trail. As you come back to charming Kranjska Gora, you have completed your great Julian Alps circle.

Distance: 18,7 km
Elevation: 520 m+

Today you can enjoy a slightly later breakfast. After that, it will be necessary to say goodbye to Triglav National Park and return to Ljubljana or the airport with your transport.
